Judges

Jurists from Central Europe assimilated into the judicial system in Israel only after the establishment of the state.
Some 250 attorneys arrived in Palestine from Central Europe from 1933 to 1934, but most of them could not practice for a number of reasons:
First, their legal knowledge pertained to the European (Continental) justice system, while the justice system in Palestine in the British Mandate period was a mixture of British, Ottoman, Muslim and French law; second, they were not fluent in the languages spoken in Palestine and its courts; third, the Mandate government declined to integrate immigrant lawyers, even if they passed the bar, and as a result, many of them retrained in agriculture, office work or commerce.
Some entered the private sector in veteran law firms or were employed as legal-economic advisers.

The establishment of Israel saw many positions open up for Central European jurists.
Their presence was clearly felt at the various levels of the court system, especially in the Supreme Court.

Although they were unable to bring about a revolution that would replace the existing legal system with the Continental one, some of them, especially those who served on the Supreme Court, contributed to integrating elements of the German legal system into the worldview of the Israeli legal system.

These elements were among the variety of other influences that shaped legal system in Israel.
