Recha Freier 1892-1984

Biography

Recha (Schweitzer) Freier was born on October 29, 1892 in the town of Norden in Lower Saxony. When she was a child, the family moved to the city of Glogau in Silesia (now Glogów in western Poland).

She married Rabbi Moshe Moritz Freier and the couple had three sons and a daughter.

1981

In 1981, Freier was awarded the Israel Prize for her life’s work and her special contribution to the society and the state in welfare, community and youth services.

Freier was trained at Breslau teachers’ college as a teacher of languages.

1932

n 1932, Freier volunteered in the Jewish community’s employment bureau in Berlin and helped a dozen Jewish young people who had been dismissed from their jobs due to antisemitism. She came to realize that the solution to the distress of Jewish youth was Zionism and working the land.

In Palestine, Freier established the Agricultural Training Center for Jewish Children as an educational program for children who had been removed from their parents’ homes. Like the idea of Youth Aliyah, the children received an agricultural education after which they moved to farming communities throughout the country, especially kibbutzim. Thus Freier established her reputation as a shining example of Zionist educator.
