The Fifth Aliyah made its mark on all realms of life in pre-state Israel’s Jewish community, but its most visible contribution was arguably in architecture. A select few architects from Central Europe, or those who received their professional education there, shaped the face of architecture in the Jewish community, which experienced continuous growth in the 1930s and 1940s.
The knowledge and standards that defined their work, along with the modern style emphasizing functionality, rationality and minimalism became the dominant line in this country for many decades. The architects sought liberation from the bonds of the past and thus set the foundation for the architectural appearance of the State of Israel, which was influenced by the Bauhaus movement.
The immigrant architects made use of local building materials, integrating into them advanced construction technology, while seeking solutions to this country’s climate, topographic, economic and security conditions. They were pioneers in urban and rural planning and contributed to the growth of cities and settlement clusters. Their influence can be seen in every aspect of planning: from new cities and the expansion of existing ones to the design of agricultural communities and the planning of public buildings in cities and kibbutzim. They are responsible for the design of key government institutions, universities, major hospitals, museums and famous hotel chains. Their imprint can be felt in new cities, residential neighborhoods, apartment houses and private homes.
