With the rise of the Nazis to power in 1933, some 600 acclaimed Jewish scholars in the exact sciences and the humanities left Germany. Many settled in various countries, mainly the United States, with smaller number immigrating to Palestine.
Those who came to this country played a major role in the development of the sciences and of academic institutions here. Most of the arrivals from Central Europe made their mark mainly in two academic institutions in Israel: the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Technion in Haifa.
