The Hebrew language was a major obstacle for many of the writers that came from Germany to Palestine in the 1930s. In Israel a union of Israeli authors who wrote in German was founded, and among the most notable figures who continued to write in this language were Shalom Ben- Horin (1913–1999), Anna Maria Jokl (1911–2011) and Jenny Aloni (1917–1993), as well as the poet David Ignatz Neumann (1894–1991).
In the late 1930s, there were more German-language newspapers and journals in Palestine than in any other foreign language. Prominent among them were “Yedioth Hadashot” (Neuste Nachrichten) and “Yediot HaYom” – daily newspapers that provided news and articles for the immigrants in their own language. Despite the language difficulties, many new arrivals from Central Europe actively contributed to journalism in this country, advancing the field and leaving a lasting impact.
