1939, in Palestine: “Do you see that fellow with the shovel?
He was a professor in Berlin before he came to this country. And the man milking the cow? He was a senior doctor in a major hospital before he fled.”
Laborer: “Do you see that Dachshund?
In Hungary he was a St. Bernard.”

A Jecke asks his Romanian friend: “What’s actually the difference between a Jecke and a Romanian?”
“I’ll show you,” replies the Romanian. He takes him to Cohen the Jecke’s grocery store and asks for a box of matches.
The Romanian opens the box and says to Cohen: “ I need matches with the head on the left.”
Cohen answers: “Sorry, I don’t have any of those.”
The pair cross the street to a Romanian’s grocery and repeat their request.
The Romanian replies: “No problem, but it will cost you another penny.” He turns the box around under the counter.
“So now you see the difference?” The Romanian asks.
The Jecke thinks for a moment and replies: “But maybe Cohen really didn’t have any of those matches?”

Jecke: “Nu, well…if you try to read the newspaper in Hebrew, by the time you get to the middle, it’s not news anymore.”

What exactly is a Jecke? A Jecke is someone who says:
“I’ll be there tomorrow at 8 o’clock,” and he shows up the next day at 8 o’clock.
